Established on December 9, 1906, Hawley owes its origins to the expansion of the Wichita Valley Railroad, which connected with the Santa Fe Railroad that passes through Abilene. The railroad, built into Anson in 1906, played a crucial role in the town’s development, as documented by the late H. B. Bradshaw, a Civil Engineer from Abilene who worked on the project.
Named after C.W. Hawley, an official of the Fort Worth & Denver Railroad Company, the town quickly grew as lots were sold by the Hawley Townsite Company, with Mr. Fletcher Scott serving as the surveyor.
